MemFlex Program

SUPPORTING RURAL MENTAL WELLBEING THROUGH POSITIVE MEMORY TRAINING

About the MemFlex Program

The MemFlex program is a research initiative developed by Associate Professor Caitlin Hitchcock, Clinical Psychologist and Mechanisms of Mental Health lab director at the University of Melbourne, together with Professor Tim Dalgleish, Professor at the University of Cambridge. In partnership with the National Centre for Farmer Health (NCFH) Memflex is being trialled in rural communities as an online primarily self-directed program that refocuses individuals towards positive memories from their past.

MemFlex aims to strengthen positive memory recall skills to support mood and everyday ability to engage in life, particularly during and following periods of heightened stress such as drought, bushfires, or industry challenges affecting rural communities.

We are currently conducting a feasibility trial to help understand whether the MemFlex program can be delivered by community members without specialist mental health training to members of rural communities to increase access to support in areas where health services can be limited or don’t meet the needs of the community. specialised training in behavioural activation techniques to help participants develop positive habits and improve their mental health.

What does the program involve?

Participants will learn structured techniques to enhance access to positive memories, which may assist in managing stress and improving mood and everyday cognitive skills during difficult times. An orientation session will be delivered by community members trained as facilitators to support participants through a structured online program.
